Dream Control

Undoubtedly the most famous practitioner of shamanism—or sorcery, as he calls it—is Carlos Castaneda. His Native American teacher, Don Juan, stressed the importance of dream voyages: “Dreams are, if not a door, a hatch into other worlds.” According to Don Juan, what we call reality is only a description of the world in which we are currently engaged, and that description can be altered through dreaming.

To begin his instruction in dreaming, Don Juan taught Castaneda to set up dreams as a means of controlling them. This process engages your “dreaming attention” in order to shift your perceptions to new worlds or new ways of seeing this world.

But to reach a state of control takes practice. The first step for Castaneda was to be able to find his hands in his dreams, which helped him realize he was dreaming. Once you achieve this state of awareness, you can stop the action within a dream and closely examine your surroundings.

When you can control your dreams, you will have passed through the “first gate” of dreams. “The most astonishing thing that happens to dreamers is that, on reaching the first gate, they also reach the energy body.” According to Don Juan, the energy body “can transport itself in one instant to the ends of the universe.”
